Lego

Lego

We asked our team to tell us about their favourite ever piece of design. It could be a logo, a building, an object (shoes, gadgets, product packaging). The only criteria was that they consider it a thing of beauty and have an emotional connection to it.

Lego - by Chris Keller (Designer)

“A small plastic brick that has no age, sex or language barrier.”

Why do you love it? What does it mean to you?

What's not to love about it? (unless you step on it). It takes me back to being a child and how many rainy school holidays were spent playing indoors. Who says a skyscraper can't be on wheels or fully submerged in the bath on a Sunday night?

What are your favourite aspects of it?

The versatility and limitless boundaries on what can be built; from the small moon buggy to the life-size objects you can see at Legoland. From a simple small plastic brick there probably isn't many things that can't be replicated. I can guarantee if there was some Lego in front of me on my lunch break I'd be building something.

When you see lego, what memories does it bring back?

I just remember the noise it made, almost like a waterfall of plastic when the 'Lego Bin' was emptied onto the floor. This was usually followed by an instant response from my mum downstairs – "You don't need all of it out!" – but of course it all came out as you were unsure what bits were needed for that day’s build.
